足跡

ある夜、男は夢を見た。
主と共に浜辺を歩いている夢だった。
空の向こうに、彼のこれまでの人生が映し出されては消えていった。
どの場面でも、砂の上にはふたつの足跡が残されていた。
ひとつは彼自身のもの、そしてもうひとつは主のものだった。

最後のシーンが現れたとき、彼は振り返って砂の上の足跡を見た。
すると彼の人生の道程には
ひとつの足跡しか残っていない場所がいくつもあるのだった。
そして、それは彼の人生で最も辛く、
悲しいときであったことに気がついた。

彼はこのことでひどく悩み、主に尋ねた。
「主よ、かつて私があなたに従うと決心した時
あなたはどんな時も私と共に歩んでくださると
おっしゃったではありませんか。
でも私の人生で最も苦しかった時
足跡はたったひとつしかありません。
私が最もあなたを必要としていた時、
どうしてあなたは私を置き去りにされたのですか」

主は答えられた。
「わが子よ、私の大切な子供よ。
私はあなたを愛している。
私は決してあなたを見捨てたりはしない。
あなたが苦しみの中にあったとき、
たったひとつの足跡しかなかったのは
私があなたを背負って歩いていたからなのだよ」

Footprints

One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scenes he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand;
one belonged to him, and the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him,
he looked back at the footprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times along the path of his life
there was only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
you'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me."

The Lord replied,
"My son, my precious child.
I love you and I would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering.
When you see only one set of footprint,
it was then I carried you."
